Quite some time ago one of the cashiers at the local co-op asked me, “How is life treating you?” I was surprised by receiving such interestingly phrased question. After my initial shock, I answered with a definite “Life is treating me well” accompanied with a big smile on my face. I have contemplated on his question quite often ever since and came to the following understanding:
Have you ever done something that you didn’t want to because you couldn’t say no?
I have. Many times. I felt that I was forced to do things that I didn’t agree with. I felt that I didn’t have the courage to say no, and I had to comply no matter what. I was afraid of the consequences of saying no: punishment, rejection and not being loved. As physical symptoms, tightness, short of breath, pain, and heaviness were attached to that fear. The debilitating feeling of not having choices, and being trapped was my everyday company, until I said, “Enough.”
