Making resolutions is a hot topic at the beginning of a new year. We dive in with excitement and the desire to change for the better. We are determined to get rid of old habits and bring in new ones, and we do well — we are motivated, and it feels great to have the power in our hands. But after a few days, a couple of weeks, a month perhaps, the momentum slows down, the enthusiasm disappears, and we go right back to where we started. There goes the New Year’s resolution! We then find excuses and give ourselves the perfect explanation for why it didn’t work. We ignore the whole thing as if we had never even tried, or, what’s even worse, we feel guilty and beat ourselves up for not being able to keep the promises we made to ourselves. So the question is, how do we stay motivated and energized and find the way to succeed in our efforts?
What is your “why”?
Before you jump right into those resolutions and goals and what you want to bring about, it’s worth pausing and asking why you want to exercise more, why you want to lose 20 pounds, why you want to take on a meditation practice — simply put, why do you want what you want? Without understanding the real intention behind your efforts, the chances that you will give up at some point are pretty high.
Two years ago, a friend invited me to a business networking event in Boston. It was a high-end event with many opportunities to connect. I asked another friend to come with me, so we went together. Long story short, I won the raffle called the Bucket of Love, which included about $40,000 in services, goodies, and gift cards. A business coaching offering immediately caught my eye, and I was super excited to begin working with Naphtali. He helped me peel the layers off of why I do what I do. He guided me to go deep; he kept asking more about my whys, which helped me reach the most meaningful answer I could uncover.
The unfolding process can bring understanding, and with understanding comes meaning. And once we have a clear intention, fulfilling our efforts and achieving our goals become more accessible because we are being moved and held from within, creating a level of support we might not have experienced before. We then awaken the inner cheerleader in the form of that caring, loving, ongoing support.
Let’s do some role play with the weight loss example. You want to shed 20 pounds. I ask, “why?” You say, “I want to fit into that beautiful dress (or suit) I wore four years ago at my best friend’s wedding.” I ask again, “why?” You say, “because that would make me feel better about myself.” “Why?” “Because that would truly boost my confidence to attract the partner I long for.” You get the picture. It’s not about losing 20 pounds; it’s about what it enables you to create, feel, and experience. You can go as deep as you want. When you know your why, I guarantee that you’ll always have access to the resources you need and want to stay on course.
As you craft your 2022 resolutions, I leave you with this quote by Henry David Thoreau: “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings.”
Happy New Year!
Q: What is one of your resolution for this new year, and what is your why?
