“Slowly cut things out until…”

I would like to begin this new year by welcoming you into this brand new year of life. Although we always have only one day, in fact, just one moment to live, that moment is ours to decide what we would love it to be. 

My name is Viktoria Seavey, and this is the inspiration minutes at the Otis Rec Center. I am glad you are here. We started this series, you may know, back in last year when the pandemic began, and we’ve been on ever since every Tuesday and Thursday.

Last night, I found a quote that really touched my heart. To tell you the truth, I was a little bit on the downside. Things didn’t work out that I wanted to yesterday, and all of a sudden, I realized that this grey cloud was collecting over my head and all of a sudden, I started to feel that I’m not good enough, things that I do are not satisfactory, and all of those. Do you know what I’m talking about? You probably felt this way in your life when you think that you are just not good enough. There is not enough of you, and something’s just not working. 

And then I remembered, you know, I teach these tools, this is a defining moment to practice them. This is an opportunity to make a shift. So I closed my eyes, and I started to breathe deeply. Breathing in through the nose right deep into the core of our body and then breathing out slowly resets the nervous system from a flight-flight-freeze mode, and it helps to get back into the relaxation and creation mode of the nervous system. 

The relaxed and creative space is where we can see clearly. Seeing clearly is everything. Seeing clearly, feeling clear, and knowing where we are headed. Here lies our power.

With the new year, many of us make New Year’s resolutions. Are you one of those who make New Year’s resolutions? If yes, I would like to hear from you about how it works out for you. I can tell you about my experience in the past, and it didn’t go too well. I now understand why; I wanted to do different things with the same habits, which didn’t work because I kept defaulting back to the old, the same old. 

Over the years, I discovered something new. When I start changing the way I think and feel about my life, things begin to shift and truly change.

So instead of making resolutions and deciding on New Year’s resolutions, I now build my life. My meditation teacher, Natlie, taught me and said, “You are the creator of your own reality.” And the first time I heard this, I was like, what is she talking about?! I didn’t create my illness! It took me a while to go into this statement and discover its meaning for myself. Now I understand what it means. I can choose what attitude I step into a new day. I have the power to make that choice to make that decision. And you know what? You have the power too. 

We can do a little experiment; I invite you to join me in having a little experiment. Let’s watch those ‘thinking’ habits and ‘doing’ habits and choose to do them differently this time.

I would like to share the quote with you that I found last night. After I closed my eyes and breathed, I asked for guidance. I asked for a sign. And it came to me. And there was this quote, and all of a sudden, I felt as if the light just turned on. Here it is.

“Be the curator of your life. Slowly cut things out until you are left only with what you love, with what’s necessary, with what makes you happy.” This is a quote by Leo Babauta.

We do the necessary things. And we rarely think that if those things don’t make us happy, they will not last, or they will make us miserable in the long run. If I want to gain weight, but it’s not something that serves me, it’s not going to last. It’s not something that I would love. It’s not going to last. If I want to start a job because I feel that I don’t have enough money, but I hate that job that will make me unhappy, and it’s not going to last, or it’s going to cause other issues in my life.

But when I do what I love, when I pay attention to what I love, and when you pay attention to what you love in your life, what makes you truly happy, things begin to change. 

I invite you today to step into that space and start observing and going into your day with a mindset and an intention to watch what makes you happy? What makes your heart blossom?
